Job Description

Publishing company seeks exceptionally detail-oriented Proofreader for temp-to-perm role. Working onsite in Torrance, CA, the Proofreader will play a key role in ensuring accuracy and consistency within psychological and educational tests used to improve the lives of people worldwide. The Proofreader would be required to work onsite for 3 days/week until May 2019, at which time the role would became full-time (and permanet upon satisfactory reviews). 

The Proofreader is primarily responsible for proofreading large, complex assessment projects published both in print form and online. The proofreader works closely with the editors, graphic designers, and Production Manager to ensure content completeness, accuracy, and quality while meeting publishing deadlines. The Proofreader is also secondarily responsible for proofreading a steady stream of product reprints, marketing communications (product catalogs, magazine ads, and the like), Web content, and other types of content, both printed and electronic. The successful Proofreader will work closely with the lead editor on each project to ensure accuracy across deliverables. 

Job requirements 
• Minimum BA/BS, probably in English or some social science (field of study isn’t critical) 
• 3+ years combined experience as proofreader, copy editor, line editor, production editor, technical editor, technical writer, advertising/marcom copywriter, journalist, proofreader, book publishing, journal publishing, technical publications, advertising, marketing communications, or journalism
• Strong proofreading skills; use common proofreader’s marks correctly and efficiently 
• Excellent command of the English language and strong written and verbal communication skills 
• Experience with long documents with multiple heading levels and many tables, figures, numerical data, and citations and references 
• Experience working in a production environment involving hard deadlines 
• Experience with Chicago style, experience with APA style 
• Copywriting skills a plus 
• Neat, legible, confident handwriting 
• Experience with Microsoft Word track changes and Adobe Acrobat PDF markup 
• Proficiency with Macintosh, competency with Windows 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (highly proficient with Word, can get around in Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud (proficient with InDesign or InCopy, can get around in Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat Professional) 
• Knowledge of table formatting basics 
• Familiarity with technical art norms and practices 
• Familiarity with advertising copywriting/marcom norms and practices 
• Familiarity with commercial printing and prepress norms and practices 
• Familiarity with principles of design, typography, page layout, text formatting 
• Experience or interest in psychology or psychological/educational testing a plus 
• Some acquaintance with statistics, or interest in learning 

The successful Proofreader candidate will: 
• score well on proofreading tests; 
• provide evidence of self-motivation;
