Job Description

An education client here in NYC is looking for a Copy Editor with a strong digital background. XML experience is strongly preferred, but not a hard requirement. Comfort in CMS’s (preferably more than one) is a hard requirement. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES 
• Responsible for grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, word usage, consistency, trademarks and copyrights, and light fact-checking. Fully accountable for editorial quality and accuracy of all reviewed publications and marketing material. 
• Manages multiple editorial passes on operational manuals for our SAT and PSAT-related tests. 
• At some passes, the XML copyeditor will edit discrete content topics that are later assembled in our manuals, keeping on eye on consistency and understanding conditional decisions made by editors and content strategists to facilitate the reuse of this content. 
• At other passes, the XML copyeditor will conduct end-to-end reads of manuals, looking for global issues of readability and moving toward final sign-off before sending to press. 
• Acts as expert resource on all editorial matters and on organization information as it applies to publications, collaborating with Communications staff and sponsors across the organization to provide expert recommendations on all issues related to editorial style. 
• Responsible for the editing of copy to conform to a high-level grammatical standard as outlined by the Editorial Guidelines with content acceptable to particular programs, including punctuation, mechanics, and style; making text conform to the style of the publication as well as to the style/content of the program and CB overall; applying familiarity of several style guides and publishing procedures; and understanding/applying proofreading and copyediting symbols. 
• Performs project management tasks that include: establishing timelines and coordinating program components with other departments/divisions/consultants. Must adhere to deadlines that are established through mutual agreement between XML copyeditor and project manager, with XML copyeditor estimating time on project and level of work. Makes judgment calls on content and style issues independently to bring publications to deadline. 

Required Skills:* 
- This position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week; hours may be non-standard and will vary depending on editorial services project deadlines. May be asked to work nights and weekends. 
- Must have significant experience working in content management systems. Experience with XML, Oxygen, XDocs a big plus, but we will train the right candidate. 
- Specialized, proven editorial ability with complete knowledge of proofreading and copyediting symbols and general publishing/publications standards and practices. 
- Specialized, comprehensive knowledge of standard editorial style guides, especially Chicago Manual of Style and Associated Press. 
- Thorough knowledge of editing PDFs and Microsoft Word, particularly the track-changes function. 
- Excellent interpersonal skills. 
- Ability to set priorities and attain goals 
- Ability to solve problems and make decisions quickly and effectively 
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

Education/Certifications:* 
- Bachelor’s Degree, four to six years of directly related work experience.
