NYC: Bite the Big (Interactive) Apple

New York, NY. What’s not to love?

Surely America’s, if not the world’s, most vibrant metropolis, from the glitz of Manhattan to the recently reborn Brooklyn, they say if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

That’s what the jukebox was saying last time we were there, anyway.

We caught up with native New Yorker and Vitamin T Agent, Ali Meislin in our Manhattan office to find out if the Big Apple lives up to the hype and, if so, how can a digital creative get in on the action?

Vitamin T: What do you love most about New York?

Ali: Fact: New York City is the greatest city on earth. Okay, this may not actually be scientifically proven, but how else can you explain a place that attracts 45 million visitors annually and is home to over 8 million people?

A culturally diverse mecca, New York has everything from Broadway shows, amazing sports teams, and historical landmarks to botanical gardens, museums, and world class dining and nightlife. Not to mention the best pizza, delis and bagels known to man!

Vitamin T: Why is New York a great place for interactive talent?

Ali: Along with being the fashion and financial capital of the US, New York is also home to some of the best design schools (Parsons, FIT, Pratt Institute, etc.), the hottest agencies (see below), and coolest start-ups (foursquare, Etsy, OMGPOP) in the world. It also doesn't hurt that even the walls and sidewalks are inspiring!

Vitamin T: What advice would you have for talent moving to New York?

Ali: Save before moving! Though it is well worth it, the cost of living is very high. Also, don't be afraid of freelancing. There are so many digital and creative opportunities available here, which enable us to keep our talent very busy with a ton of great gigs. Nothing enhances a portfolio like a diverse project and client list. Lastly, there are 6,374.6 miles of streets in NYC. Do not be afraid to look like a tourist - bring a map!

Vitamin T: What are some great networking organizations to connect with in New York?

Ali: You should try:

Vitamin T: Who are some of the hottest ad agencies in the city?

R/GA - An interactive, digital advertising agency, also head-quartered in NYC. Some of their clients include Nike, L'Oréal, Walmart, and Verizon (just to name a few!)

Jack Morton - A NYC-headquartered global brand experience agency, they recently won a Stevie Award for 'Best Product Introduction Event.'

Mr. Youth - A NYC-based experiential brand marketing agency.

HUGE - A full-service interactive agency specializing in enhancing digitally-driven businesses. Based in Brooklyn, they've helped clients like JetBlue, IKEA, and Pepsi.

Razorfish - The agency for marketing, experience, and enterprise, representing awesome clients like Audi, Carnival Cruise Lines, Visa, and CNN.

McCann Worldgroup - The world's largest marketing communications network, it includes eight companies specialized in magnifying their client's brand and growth.

Vitamin T: What odd factoids can you share about New York that newcomers wouldn't know?

  • New York is known for its cold weather, but the average sidewalk temperature on a hot summer day is 150 degrees. Do not go barefoot!
  • Contrary to popular belief, New York City has the lowest crime rate of the 25 largest US cities.
  • And a helpful tip: The street Houston is pronounced "how-ston." We will know you are not from here if you pronounce it like the city in Texas!
