How To Watch the Webby Awards Live (Okay, or Later)

No, this is not really a How To blog post about the awards, which might look like: 1. Order pizza, 2. Find comfortable chair, 3. Grab a drink... But after spending a week at Internet Week NY, we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you how you can catch the 16th annual Webby Awards streaming live tonight.

Patton Oswalt will be hosting (best known as the voice of Remy in the film Ratatouille and portraying Spencer Olchin in the sitcom The King of Queens), so it’s bound to be funny, as usual. They already have some videos of his on the site.

For the uninitiated, think of the Webbys as the Academy Awards but with fewer people who have done jail time. (Wait, did we say that out loud?)

The Red Carpet starts at 4:30 ET for those interested in hearing winners say more than five words. (You can get in the mood by watching some of last year’s streams.)

And yes it’s true, winners of a Webby Award need to make their speeches in just five words. Keeps things moving along, right? And believe it or not, these 5-word wonders are usually pretty good. Some of the standouts from last year:

  • “Thanks. This is deeply weird.” (James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem)
  • “Will this ceremony ever end?” (Ira Glass, This American Life)
  • “Can you hear me now?” (Martin Cooper, Inventor of the Cell Phone)
  • “These tentacles go to eleven.” (Scott Beale, Laughing Squid)
  • “Every check-in saves a kitten.” (Dennis Crowley, Foursquare)
  • "Can anyone fix my computer?” (Beastie Boys)
  • “Skype’d your mom last night.” (Skype)

As well as a few not fit for print. Even on a blog.

The awards part of the night will be May 21 at 5:30 ET streaming through the Webby Awards site.

If you tune in you can also catch this year’s special achievement award winners:

Webby Person of the Year: Louis C.K.
Webby Artist of the Year: Björk
Best Actresses of the Year: Juliette Lewis and Graydon Sheppard of "Sh*t Girls Say"
Webby Breakout of the Year: Instagram
Webby Agency of the Year: BBH

As well as the Webby Award Winners and the People’s Voice Winners. (Mashable has a great compiled list of all the winners.)

Look for us mugging in the background!

Okay, our boss told us we can’t mug, since we’re sponsors and all.

So look for us acting extremely responsible.

So seriously, look for us in the live coverage - we'll be there!

UPDATE: If you missed it live, the Webby Awards site is now showing highlights from the night. So you can still catch:
