Even though iMedia's blog post is written primarily for a marketing crowd, it’s an excellent primer of what NOT to do on your resume (should you have one currently in circulation).

Interviewed in the post for their sage resume advice are senior digital marketers from J.M. Smucker Co., American Family Insurance, Kraft Foods, American Express, and Best Buy. These are folks who’ve seen a LOT of resumes, as well have done a lot of hiring. In other words, you could do worse for good advice.

Here’s a list of 11 common resume mistakes (be sure to watch the short videos for full answers):

  1. Listing skills you don't excel in
  2. Forgetting relevant experience
  3. Mass-sending your resume
  4. Ignoring business goals and strategies
  5. Not bringing your A-game
  6. Overusing the term "digital"
  7. Over-focusing on LinkedIn
  8. Being too full of yourself
  9. Lying
  10. Ignoring storytelling and ROI
  11. Not being passionate

While we’re at it, here are a few more to add to those 11:

  • Using a dated or un-design-savvy font (for those in the design world)
  • Providing a functional resume that doesn’t explain depth of experience in key skills
  • Not proofreading, proofreading, proofreading

You’ll thank us for that last one. We have a lot more resume advice for you, including:
